Prior to curator Tsai JiaZhen residency in 2013 at the Cité internationale des Arts in Paris, she backpacked through the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains and countries in Central Asia. Throughout her journey, the greatest impact her experienced wasn’t when she stepped foot in those various nations; rather, it was at the borders, when she was confronted by the custom officials with the seemingly ordinary questions, pinpointing at issues of identity acceptance: “who am I/who are you?”; “why are you here?”; “where are you going?” And this subject seems to have been persistently lurking in her previous curatorial projects (exhibition titles).

The occurrence has not only stimulated her physical experience; it has also incited thoughts on the issues of acceptance, such as to see the self’s ambiguous existence from the perspective of others is prompted by the negligence to clearly see where the “boundary” of the “self” lies, and what form does it take on. Therefore, the on-site installation and the sound installation included in this exhibition, Tensional Boundary, are focused on the sense of acceptance and existence evoked by the notion of “boundary”. The boundary proposed is not intended to specify the parameter for acceptance; on the other hand, only by being present at the tensed boundary could the vague truth about existence and acceptance become more distinct.

Included in Tensional Boundary are installation works by Chinese artist, Dexi Tian, and Singaporean artist, Dennis Tan. The figurative vernacular employed by each artwork and the overall configuration of the entire exhibition contain expressions of strong political allegories, with the abstract proposition regarding existence and acceptance profoundly echoed from the geographical position of being at the boundary.
