Loop # 03

2013. 05. 19 - 2013. 06. 16

Hui-Hsuan Hsu

CICA: Changing Identities and Contexts in the Arts: Artistic Research as the New European Paradigm for the Arts中的相關研討會與聯展。

Hui-Hsuan Hsu (b.1982) is an artist who specialises in digital moving images. Hsu visualises and transfers observations of easily overlooked objects and phenomena into digital mediums to deliver visual portrayalsof underrepresented subjects. Hsu was born and raised in Kaohsiung Taiwan, and graduated from National Kaohsiung Normal University with a BA and MA in Fine Art before beginning her PhD studies at Leeds in 2001. During her PhD career,Hsu has participated in several events related to 'CICA: Changing Identities and Contexts in the Arts: Artistic Research as the new European Paradigm for the Arts.' Hsu’s moving image work has been exhibited in New York, London, Edinburgh as well as Leeds, and will be featured in an upcomingsolo showat York College Gallery (UK) in November 2013, where Hsu will debut her newest works.

Hui-Hsuan Hsu visualises and transfers observations of easily overlookedobjects and phenomenainto digital forms. Using digital techniques as an extension of and compensation forweaknesses of the body’s senses, she leverages digital devicesin rolessuch as a “semi-transparent prosthesis” to connect the object photographed with artists and viewers, therebycreatinga rhythmbetween the physical, the mechanical and the perceptional in her works. Hsu questions the notion of ‘point of view’ whereby the camera becomes a more active agent between the artist’s ‘seeing’ and mental perception. Hsu’s video pieces may create a sense of paradoxical imagination, guiding audiences’ consciousness to float between the familiar and the unfamiliar, the recognisableand the unrecognisable. Offering an alternative experience to watching mainstream film, Hsu’s ‘moving image objects’create in audiences adistinctperception of uncertainty and provocative ambiguity.
